The Role of Magnesium in Plants
Magnesium is not only a major component of the fertilizer but also an essential secondary nutrient for plant growth. Its core functions include :
• Core component of chlorophyll: Magnesium is the central atom in chlorophyll molecules. Without magnesium, plants cannot synthesize chlorophyll, making photosynthesis impossible.
• Enzyme activator: Magnesium activates the activity of various enzymes in plants, participating in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
• Promotes phosphorus absorption and transport: Facilitates the movement and utilization of phosphorus within plants.
• Improves crop quality: Sufficient magnesium increases oil content in oil crops, sugar content in sugar crops, and protein content in food crops.
Common Types
• Magnesium sulfate: The most common water-soluble magnesium fertilizer, containing approximately 10% magnesium and 13% sulfur. Fast-acting, it can be applied both to the soil and as a foliar spray.
• Magnesium oxide: Alkaline with a high magnesium content (around 55%). Slow-acting yet long-lasting, it is suitable for acidic soils.
• Magnesium hydroxide: More strongly alkaline, often used to adjust soil pH while supplementing magnesium.
• Magnesium nitrate: A high-quality water-soluble magnesium fertilizer, containing about 16% magnesium and 11% nitrogen. Ideal for modern agricultural facilities such as drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation.
• Calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer: A multi-nutrient fertilizer that, in addition to phosphorus, contains 10%-15% magnesium, along with calcium and silicon.
• Dolomite powder: A natural mineral primarily composed of calcium magnesium carbonate. It acts as a long-acting, slow-release magnesium fertilizer and soil amendment, particularly suitable for improving acidic soils.
